Marblehead Residence
Massachusetts

This project adds a second floor to 1,400 square feet existing ranch house. This significant change to the structure allowed Machado•Blake to relocate the windows and capture views of the site from the living spaces that were not available in the original. As with most of Machado•Blake’s work, the goal of this renovation is to have the house linked to its site in a complete way.

West Street Apartments
Cambridge, Massachusetts

The goal of this renovation was to modernize this 1970's dormitory. On one level there were cosmetic changes to the interiors, such as new kitchen and bathroom finishes. The other level was to gain a height variance to the top two units. Machado•Blake secured permission to build two clerestory head-houses for both unit and the stairwell. Along with these elements, a new railing system and new entry canopy were designed.

Gloucester Residence
Massachusetts

This 400 square foot addition/renovation to an 1850 square foot house that sits at the edge of Gloucester Bay. By adding corner windows and a winged roof to the new master bedroom suite, the design captures the light and panoramic views of the bay which were blocked from view in the existing house.

Revere Residence
Massachusetts

The goal of this project is to build a house on a small non-conforming lot. There is a range of constraints facing this work - the site size, the scope of the topography and the required budget are squeezing the living area of the house.
As a result, the house size is only 1,900 square feet and is intended to a “Shop Built” house. The use of a manufacturer house was decided on because of the low - budget issue. The projected cost is $225,000 including the site work.

Brookline Renovation
Massachusetts

The focus of this renovation was to revise the existing kitchen into something new and open. By removing some walls Machado•Blake Design was able to create aloft arrangement between the new kitchen and the existing dining. The design also made a projected bay window that gave light and vista to an adjacent garden that was unappreciated in the existing.

Pond Residence
Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts

This 8,500 square foot new house is located on Hammond Pond in the Chestnut Hill Historic District. This design strikes a balance between the client’s desire to have a progressive lake house interior and the town’s requirement that the exterior fit within the historic vernacular of the district. The program centers around a large living/dining area with a connection to a dining terrace, 4 bedrooms and a master bedroom suite. This site plan proposed by Machado•Blake Design creates a series of overlooks that allowing the owner's to enjoy the pond on many levels.

Pond Residence
New Fairfield, Connecticut

This 950 square foot addition and renovation sits directly on top of the existing one story structure. The renovation takes advantage of the natural landscape by creating a marriage between the indoors and the outdoors. By adding corner windows and an outdoor deck off the master bedroom, the design captures the light and panoramic views of the pond which were blocked from view in the existing house.

Status: Construction scheduled for completion: Spring 2004.

Holliston Residence
Holliston, Massachusetts

This 560 square foot addition rests directly on top of one side of the existing split- level house. The scope of this project includes adding a master bedroom suite as a new second floor. In an effort to not overwhelm the scale of both the existing house and it's suburban neighborhood, this renovation seamlessly builds upon the existing forms, while allowing new large glass openings to take advantage of views to the backyard and southern light.

Lexington Residence
Massachusetts

This 3600 square foot house was built in the 1950s by The Architects' Collaborative and has had four additions inserted in and around the original house. Each addition has subsumed the original feel of the house and rendered it unworkable for the new owner. Machado•Blake Design has designed a series of interventions to fix these spatial problems and bring the house back to its intended openness.

Jamaica Plain Residence
Massachusetts

Conversion of an 1,100 square foot attic into a master bedroom suite. The curved wall serves as a transition from the stairway into the main room maintaining the fluidity of the space. The floor finish is to be bamboo strip flooring. The walls are to have wood wainscoting up to the spring point of the ceiling. The ceiling is to be drywall with a smooth skim finish. This palette of materials will give a light visual texture to the space.

Medford Residence
Massachusetts

This 450 square foot addition and deck updates the house while maintaining its' vernacular feel. The scope of this project includes remodeling the second floor master bedroom and bathroom by building a narrow addition over the existing first floor family room. The roof of the family room is to be revised to cover the base of the new addition and to extend to form the cover of a new porch.

Inkspot Lofts
Somerville, Massachusetts

This 13,000 square foot new loft building for artists bridges the gap between the residential character of the neighborhood and the industrial space needs of the artists. Machado•Blake Design was also involved with the custom fit out of two of the six loft units.

Status: Completed Spring 2003.

East Cambridge Residence
Massachusetts

This 2,250 square foot new house replaces the existing 1400 square foot house by reusing the existing foundation and extending the structure across the site rather than back into the site. Machado•Blake Design's intention to preserve the house location and backyard open space was cited as an urbanistically sensitive solution by the Cambridge Historic Commission. Beverly Residence
Beverly Farms, Massachusetts

This 4,500 square foot new home derives it's inspiration from the clients' affection for the English Manor aesthetic. The challenges for this design originate with its difficult site rather than the clients' program. The site offers adequate width, but is rather tight in depth. And while the site offers charming vistas of the ocean, it also fronts a busy street. The program includes 3 bedrooms and master bedroom suite.

Inkspot Loft #1
Somerville, Massachusetts

Interior of one of the two fit-outs in new loft building for artists. The design of the lofts bridge the gap between the residential character of the neighborhood and the industrial space needs of the artists.

Inkspot Loft #2
Somerville, Massachusetts

Interior of one of the two fit-outs in new loft building for artists, this 1,200 square foot loft allows for a spacious living and dining area that is flanked by a south facing window wall, while secluding the private bedrooms to the back terrace. The client, a local author, stressed a need for book storage and display, which was addressed by the design of custom bookshelves that maintain various medias, supplies and sculptures.

Belmont Residence
Massachusetts

This 1,800 square foot addition and 1,800 square foot renovation strikes an aesthetic balance between the prevailing Colonial vernacular of its context and the modern aspirations of the new owners Machado•Blake Design has created a series of visual devices to mitigate the fact that the addition nearly doubles the size of the existing house.

Avon Villa
Massachusetts

8,500 square foot new house. This project is based on Southern European villa. The house contains a variety of living arrangements that are tailored to the client's diverse family requirements. All the spaces are arranged around a cloistered precinct within the site. The house finishes are stucco walls and stone floors with radiant heat.

Chestnut Hill Residence
Massachusetts

This 15,000 square foot new house is located on a two acre site. The design strives to disguise its size by varying the massing and tightly weaving it with the site landscaping. The program includes, a main house with formal entry foyer, 2 dining areas, a gallery, formal and family living rooms, game room, 6 bedrooms and a master bedroom suite and pool pavilion and guest house.

Andover Residence
Massachusetts

2,000 square foot interior renovation is first phase of a 5,000 square foot total renovation and addition. The romantic modern style created by Machado•Blake Design included the design and fabrication of the majority of the furnishings and unique finishes with the spaces. This first phase was completed in 1997 and won two 1998 Boston Society of Architects Interior Awards for both the living spaces and the home office design. This project is featured in Residential Architect July-August 1999 Issue.

Status: Phase 2 construction complete 2001.

Orleans Residence
Cape Cod, Massachusetts

2,500 square foot new house. This house is designed to fit in with the local salt box vernacular. The house contains 4 bedrooms, 21/2 baths and a great room that is surrounded by a generous wrap-around porch. House plans available, contact Christopher Blake.

Winchester Residence
Massachusetts

3,000 square foot addition and renovation. The design intention of this project is to resurrect the Mission style details embedded with in this Spanish Colonial house.

Pecan Alley Farm
South Carolina

This 6,000 square foot new house is set at the end of a majestic 700 foot pecan alleé that bisects the 160 acre property. The house terminates this axis with a majestic columned facade. The themes are in response to the clients affection for Louisiana Plantations. The project contains a modern state of the art house within its historical facades. The program included 4 bedrooms and a master bedroom suite, formal living and dining rooms and spa area. There is 4 car garage in the basement and a bonus media room under the roof. The house is being designed in concert with a barn by Harrison• Banks.

Status: Unbuilt.

Pine Meadow Farm
North Carolina

A 3,200 square foot, plantation farm house is set in the midst of a 15 acre farm. The house has three bedrooms including the master bed suite, 2 car garage with bonus room for the family. The house has a bridge connecting to a 10-stall barn designed by Harrison• Banks.

Status: Complete Summer 2001.

Newtonville Residence
Massachusetts

Despite it's size, this 400 square foot addition integrates the house with its site. The sloping interior section of the addition allows the client to attain a vista of the steeply graded back yard. The program includes a new dining room, custom kitchen, and a general modernization of the interior.

Newton Residence, Massachusetts

Arlington Residence, Massachusetts
2,500 square foot addition and renovation. This modest project gave its owners the space they needed via the simplest materials. Machado•Blake Design strives to deliver smart planning regardless of the budget constraints.

Wellesley Residence, Massachusetts
1,000 square foot addition. This modest addition contains a master bedroom suite with a sweeping curved ceiling and a bay window with seat that overlooks the future reflecting pool and rear garden.

South End Condominium, Boston
1,800 square foot triplex renovation. This complete renovation unified two units of a former multi-family town house. The renovation included a new kitchen, primary bathroom, and cantilevered spiral stair connecting the living area to the sleeping quarters.

Status: Completed Fall 1998.

Merrimac Residence, Massachusetts
1,000 square foot addition. This modest addition involves expanding a living room toward its spectacular view of the Merrimac River.

Status: Unbuilt.

Beacon Hill Town house, Boston
8,000 square foot interior renovation.This gut renovation that unified five floors of a formally multi-family town house into a single family residence.

Status: Unbuilt.

Back Bay Condominium
Boston

1,200 square foot Duplex renovation and rooftop penthouse. Machado•Blake Design completed a rigorous design review process with the Back Bay Historical Society and Air rights negotiations with the condominium owners.

Status: Unbuilt.

Brookline Residence, Massachusetts
1,200 square foot renovation. This project restored this two family house to a single unit. The program included a new kitchen, dining and living area with a deck connection to the garden.

Status: Currently under construction.

Arlington Residence, Massachusetts
2,500 square foot addition and renovation. The design for this project restored the house to its lakeside roots by reorienting the views from the living areas towards the water.

Status: Completed Summer 1998.

Greenwich Village Condominium, New York
2,000 square foot triplex in Greenwich Village. This gut renovation included a new kitchen, primary bathroom and curved wall in the stair hall that connected the living areas to the sleeping mezzanine.

Status: Completed Spring 1997.

Nashua Residence, New Hampshire
2,500 square foot renovation. This modest project gave its owners the space they needed via the simplest materials. Machado•Blake Design delivered spatial impact in spite of the budget constraints.

Status: Completed Summer 1997.

Wayland Residence, Massachusetts
5,000 square foot renovation. This extensive renovation that restored the houses connection to the lakeside site by means of a belvedere that took advantage of the house's 180 degree water view. The house contained 5 bedrooms, in-law apartment, sound room and coffee lab.

Status: Completed Summer 1996.

Ski House, Pennsylvania
1,250 square foot new house. This vacation house received an award for compact house design in 1996 and is published in the book Small House Designs. House plans available, contact Christopher Blake.

Allston Condominium, Boston
645 square foot renovation. This complete renovation increased the spatial breadth of this tiny living environment by building furniture and storage in to the very thickness of the wall. This use of the wall thickness allowed the floor space to relived of furniture other than for sitting or sleeping.

Accord Guest Barn, New York
645 square foot conversion of a farm barn into a livable unit. This gut renovation increased the spatial breadth of this 90 year old post and beam barn by removing the part wall to the adjoining 30 year old trussed garage. The two spaces although dramatically were pulled together by bridging the building in furniture and storage in to the very thickness of the wall. This use of the walls allowed the floor space to relived of furniture other than for sitting or sleeping.
